School Festivals and Traditions

I would like to tell you about our school feasts. Here are they: Halloween, Cake Day, International Theater Day, Career Week, Sweets Day, Teacher’s Day, Friend's Day, Tea Day, and St. Valentine's Day. I will describe just some of them.

Halloween. Each year the student council of our school decides how we can celebrate it in an interesting way. It was unusual to walk in the corridors of the school this year, because most of the students had some detail of Halloween clothing: some of the students covered their faces with scary masks, others dressed up as fairy-tale characters: Winnie the Pooh, a witch etc.

Career Week. This is a week during which actors and writers come to our school. They tell us about themselves, their careers, and also about the people who inspired them.

International Theater Day. It is not a school holiday, but it is commemorated at our school. Often, the students give a live performance in the Main Hall.

To sum up, all the school festivals are different, but interesting.

School Festivals and Traditions

There are a lot of festivals and traditions in my school. The school celebrates those days: Theater Day – we act on stage then, National Career Week - we watch live broadcasts or recordings about professions, Earth Day - we do some workshop or go on tours, 'Action Week WITHOUT BULLYING' - we write letters to our friends and try to be more tolerant towards each other, Saint Casimir‘s Fair - a fun event when we sell our hand-made products, International Day for Tolerance – then we talk about tolerance towards each other, a European Day of Languages - we do various exercises related to languages.

I love this school because there are the teachers who support me and make me feel happy. I feel a member of a large community. I would not change this school to any other.

School Festivals and Traditions

Our school has non-traditional days that include great celebrations and traditions. Let me tell you about them.

Teachers’ Day

Teachers’ Day is always very much awaited by the students as well as the teachers. The students congratulate their teachers with cakes, cupcakes, cookies, or just give them flowers. On this day the teachers smile the most.

Halloween

Our school is really into Halloween. Almost everyone comes to school with a small detail of spooky things, like dressing up as a vampire with dark make-up, or fake blood on the face and hands.

Christmas

We celebrate Christmas by lighting up the Christmas tree, putting on a Santa’s hat, painting Christmas themed paintings, or styling our hair with glitter. This is a really fun time, because the winter holidays are coming.

13th January

This day is really quiet and calm as the whole school shows a mark of honour for the people who were killed on 13th January, 1990. The students usually light up candles, tell stories about how their parents helped others that night and the teachers talk about it during the first lesson.

St. Valentine’s Day

On St. Valentine’s Day students usually give their friends cards, gifts and put heart-shaped stickers everywhere. Everyone feels surprisingly cool with it.

Shrove Tuesday

There is also a school celebration called Shrove Tuesday. The students put on scary self-made masks, bring pancakes to school, serve them to their friends and teachers. After that, they all go outside and burn an effigy of winter called More.

Saint Casimir’s Fair

It’s the noisiest festival at school since the students sell various sweets, cakes, cupcakes, and pancakes. You can buy and taste anything you want! The upbeat music is played and everyone feels joyful.

16th February and 11th March

During these days the students organize singing talent shows and write both poems and essays about freedom.

The Last School Bell Day

The last festival of the school year is the last school bell for 4th and 8th graders. The pupils and students get their certificates and thank their teachers and parents.

School Festivals and Traditions

Every year across the country most of the schools, if not all of them, celebrate the Day of Knowledge. On 1st September students of Žygimantas Augustas Basic School come together in the courtyard bringing outstanding flowers, which are dedicated to their diligent teachers. This way we honor the beginning of autumn and beginning of our hard days that we are going to spend sitting at our classroom desks. Our flowers symbolize appreciation and respect for our teachers.

As cold months approach, Christmas vibes are definitely felt in the classrooms and hallways of our school. Usually, every class has some sort of Christmas decorations, like Christmas trees, garlands, or Christmas lights taped to the walls. The staff of our school try to treat their beloved students with excessive kindness. Right before the Christmas holidays, the students organize Christmas parties or other activities for all of us to enjoy. This year we are going to cover the topic of Santa Clause from different countries.

Right after the New Year’s celebration, we get back to school to commemorate a very important day of the brave and kind people that were lost in January 13th attacks when the Soviet army tried to overtake Lithuanian government in Vilnius by surrounding the capital. As the tanks and heavy artillery were patrolling tiny Vilnius’ streets, 14 lives were lost, and those 14 families were changed forever. With grief we honor those who were not afraid to stand up and fight for their freedom by lighting candles and standing in silence for one minute as a mark of respect for the dead.

Usually, right before Mother’s Day the elementary classes celebrate Mother’s Day by singing, dancing, and performing on stage. They recite poems and give gifts for their beloved mothers.

Overall, I love my school since I love the feeling of being part of a great community. As I see it, my school is quite festive as it has a lot of traditions that are yearly followed.
